Philosophy for Old Age(노년기의 철학)

If you don't read this to the very end, you have lost a day in your life.

And when you have finished, do as I am doing and send it on.

 

Do you realise that the only time in your lives

 when we like to get old is when we're kids?

살던  나이 드는 것을 좋아한 유일한 때는

우리가 애였을 때라는 것을 아시나요?

 

If you're less than 10 years old,

 you're so excited about ageing that you think in fractions.

10 미만의 아이들은 나이 드는 것에

그처럼 들떠서 나이를 분수로 계산하지요.

 

‘How old are you?’ ‘I'm four and a half!’

You're never thirty-six and a half.

  살이지?’ ‘ 4 반이에요!’

36 반이라고 하는  전혀 없지요.

 

You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key.

 4 반에서 5살로 가는 그게 비결이 거죠.

 

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back.

10대로 들어서면 붙잡아둘  없지요.

 

You jump to the next number, or ever a few ahead.

 다음 숫자로 뛰든가    붙이지요.

 

‘How old are you?’

 살이지?’

 

‘I'm gonna be 16!’ You could be 13.

  16  거예요.’ 13세일 가능성이 많지요.

 

But hey, you're gonna be 16!

허나 뭐라 해도, 16살이  거고!

 

And then the greatest day of your life.

그러다가 사는 중에 가장 획기적이 .

 

You become 21.

 21세가 되는 거죠.

 

Even the words sound like a ceremony.

  자체가 하나의 예식같이 들리죠.

 

You become 21. Yessss!!!

 21세가 된다야아아!

 

But then you turn 30. Oooohh.

그러고 나선 30세로 바뀐다우우우후.

 

What happened there? 

어찌  일인가요?

 

Make you sound like bad milk!

썩은 우유같이 들리니 말이죠!

 

He TURNED; we had to throw him out.

그가 바뀌었고그를 던져 버려야  처지죠.

 

There's no fun now, you're just a sour-dumpling.

What's wrong? What's changed?

이젠 재미가 없고방금 씁씁한 수제비가  것이죠.

뭐가 틀렸고뭐가 바뀌었나요?

 

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're pushing 40. Whoa!

21세가 되고, 30세로 바뀌고그런 후엔 40세로 밀고 가죠후와!

 

Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away.

 제동기를 걸어야죠이제 그저 미끄러져 내려갑니다.

 

Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.

 깨닫기도 전에 50 다다르고 모든 꿈이 사라져가죠.

 

But wait!!!

그러나 잠간만!!!

 

You MAKE it to 60.

60세가 되는 거죠.

 

You didn't think you would!

그리 될지 생각도 못했죠!

 

So you BECOME 21,

그래 21세가 되고,

 

TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

30세로 바뀌고, 40세로 밀고 가선, 50세에 다다르고, 60세가 되는 거죠.

 

You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70!

그동안 속도를 꽤나 길러 이제 70 부딪히죠.

 

After that it's a day-by-day thing;

그런 후엔 그게 매일매일 일이 되죠.

 

you HIT Friday, January 04, 2013!

오늘에 부딪히죠!

 

You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle,

you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime.

 80세에 들어서면 매일매일이 순전히 반복이죠점심시간에 부딪히고,

4:30에로 바뀐   시간에 이르죠.

 

And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards.

거기서 끝나는  아니죠. 90세로 들어서면 뒷걸음치기 시작하죠.

 

‘I was JUST 92.’

  방금 92 되었다.’

 

Then a strange thing happens.

그리고 나선 기이한 일이 생기죠.

 

If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again.

 ‘I'm 100 and a half!’

100세를 넘기고 나면다시 어린 애기로 되는 거죠.

  이제 100 반일세!’

 

May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!.

여러분 모두 건강한 100 반에 이르도록!

 

 

How to Stay Young 젊게 사는 

 

1.    Throw out nonessential numbers.

                                      필요 없는 숫자들은 던져 버려라.

 

This includes age, weight and height.

나이무게 숫자를 포함해서다.

 

Let the doctors worry about them.

That is why you pay 'them'.

의사들이나 그런 것들을 염려케 하다.

그래서 그들에게 돈을 지분하는 거다.

 

2.    Keep only cheerful friends.

                                               명랑한 친구들만 가져라.

 

The grouches pull you down.

불평분자들은  끌어내린다.

 

 

3.    Keep learning.

                                                     계속 배워 가라.

Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever ...

콤이나 공예나정원 가꾸기나 무엇이든  배워라.

 

Never let the brain idle. ‘An idle mind is the devil's workshop.’

두뇌가  없이 가만히 있지 않게 하라.

 없이 가만히 있는 머리는 악마의 일터가 된다.’

 

And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

그리고 악마의 이름은 치매라고 한다.

 

4.    Enjoy the simple things.

                                                단순한 일들을 즐겨라.

 

5.    Laugh often, long and loud.

                                           종종 길게 그리고 크게 웃어라.

 

Laugh until you gasp for breath.

 막힐 때까지 웃어라.

 

6.    The tears happen.

                                                  눈물 흘릴 때가 있다.

 

Endure, grieve, and move on.

 참고 슬퍼한 후로 계속 밀고 나가라.

 

The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves.

 Be ALIVE while you are alive.

우리 일생동안 같이해 주는 사람이란 우리 자신뿐이다.

살아 있는 동안 살아 있어라.

 

7.    Surround yourself with what you love,

좋아하는 것들로 주변을 둘러싸라.

 

whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever.

Your home is hour refuge.

가족이든애완동물이든기념품이든음악이든초목들이든취미든무엇이든.

  집이  피난처인 거죠.

 

8.    Cherish your health:

건강을 소중히 여겨라.

 

If it is good, preserve it.

건강하면 계속 건강을 유지하라.

 

If it is unstable, improve it.

If it is beyond what you can impover, get help.

건강하지 못하면 건강하도록 애써라.

혼자 힘으로 건강하게 되지 못할 지경엔 도움을 청해라.

 

9.    Don't take guilt trips.

죄의식에 사로잡히지 말라.

 

Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county;

to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

실내 상점가로 가든가 이웃마을이나 외국으로 여행을 떠나되,

죄의식이 있는 곳에는 가지 말라.

 

10. Tell the people that you love them, at every opportunity.

기회 있는 대로 사랑한다고 사람들에게 알려라.

 

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

그리고  기억하라.

 

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,

 but by the moments that take oure breath away.

인생은 우리가 얼마나 오래 살며  쉬었나에 달려 있지 않고,

얼마나  막힐 정도의 감명적인 순간을 보냈나로 측정된다는 것을.

 

And if you don't send this to at least 8 people - who cares?

그리고  글을 최소한 8명에게  보냈다고 해서 누가 뭐라겠나?

 

But do share this with someone ...

We all need to live life to its fullest each day!!

그래도 이걸 누구와 나눠라.

우리 모두가 매일 인생을 최대로  필요 있다는  아니겠나.
